Paddling on the river in your canoe or kayak is exciting. The tranquil waters and the beautiful surroundings will give you a peaceful experience. Paddling requires practice to get good at it and be more comfortable. Here are some tips for paddling in groups.
Check the Skirt Pull Tabs
If your group uses spray skirts, then make sure that the group has their pull tabs on the skirts outside the cockpit before you start. It shouldn’t be tucked in. Make sure that the tabs are out so that you find it easy to pull out the skirt.
Check the hatches
You must make sure that your hatches are good and sealed; whenever you do something like changing the battery of your camera or take out a sandwich while paddling, make sure that your hatches are sealed.
If water gets into the hatches, then it’s very difficult to empty the water. The modern kayaks have sealed hatches, so if you have one of those, you don’t need to worry about it.
Communication is Important
You should use all kinds of communication to ensure that everyone is on the same page and not having any trouble. You can use hand signals and communication devices like VHF radios to communicate with a group member sitting a little far away.
Delegate Responsibilities
Don’t try to do everything by yourself. You should delegate responsibilities to others. There will be a group leader, and each member must have a duty.
Bring Extra Gear and supplies
You should always be prepared for unforeseen situations or danger. So, you must bring extra gear and supplies, which include food, water, clothing, and other things.
Before you start your journey, make sure that everyone is in good health. Paddling needs a lot of energy. If you go to a remote place or in rough waters, then it is important to be in a healthy condition.
